A Rich History
Lake St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River have a rich and compelling history.  The St. Lawrence River is considered to be perhaps the oldest river in the world.  The earliest explorers were captivated by region's autumn foliage spectacular, made richly colorful by indigenous sugar maples.  The region combines the panorama of the river, the nearby Thousand Islands, autumn leaves and beautiful sunsets, making it one of the most picturesque regions anywhere in the world!

Until the mid 1700's, only native Americans and explorers ventured along the St. Lawrence River.  Following the French & Indian and Revolutionary wars, the first settlements in the region that is now Lake St. Lawrence were established around the 1790's.  A Dutch family, dressed only in deerskin clothing, was found living in primitive hut in the vicinity of the present-day village of Waddington, N.Y.  David A. Ogden and Joshua Waddington were instrumental in establishing a village in this area.

Lake St. Lawrence was created in the 1950's, during the rechanneling and dredging for the international St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Authority projects.  The lake region was once a very rough and rapid section of the St. Lawrence River, now tamed and harnessed for shipping and hydroelectric power.

Come and join Lake St. Lawrence Boat Tours as we explore this unique region and its rich and fascinating history.
